The gallery has two rooms and one long wall. I brought fourteen paintings and hung eleven. The three that went back in the van were not weaker; they said the same thing as their neighbours, a little more quietly, and a wall does not need that.
The long wall
The long wall takes the four large canvases with a metre and a half between them. Any closer and they read as one picture. Any further and you stop comparing them, which is half the point of showing a series.
Everything hangs with its centre at 150 centimetres. It is lower than most galleries choose, and it is the height I paint at.
The small one
Clay pit is forty centimetres high. On the end wall, alone, it holds a space eight times its size. I did not expect that, and it is the thing I will remember from this hang.
